Chapter Five

My brother, Bill, is coming over from the UK! I am so excited. He doesn’t have much cash at the moment, so we need to do stuff which doesn’t need much either.

Ben and Ella are back next week (finally) and they also want to do things that won’t be too expensive, but still keep up their new spirit of adventure, so next weekend seven of us are going… wait for it… camping!

We are going to the Basin on Pittwater; me, Nick and Bill, Jen, Ella, Ben, and little Charlie.

Ella has organised it all. She says it’s lucky Josie said Frank can’t stand camping because Ella couldn’t stand the little prince’s company for two whole days. I thought it would be nice for Toby to come too, but Nick says his life, i.e. wife, wouldn’t allow it.

And by the way, don’t you dare go thinking Bill and Jen will be pairing off. Bill is a great bloke, but bless big bro; he has a paunch the size of a space hopper, and that could never work for Jen. Plus, he never cleans his flat which would also not work for her and her OCD level of tidiness. When I was home in 2011 I wrote “clean me” in the dust on his chest of drawers. Mum told me it is was still partially visible under another year’s layer of filth! Bill is a true slob. But a very nice slob. He’s here for three whole months this time as he is in between contracts, and the UK IT market he works in is “pony” (which means rubbish) so he’ll stay here for a bit. On my sofa. As long as I am able to house train him. Jen says he can stay with her, but after the Kylie affair I am never inflicting my family on anyone else ever again, especially not Jen.

So, anyway, back to camping. There’s no way Jen can share a tent with Bill, and that’s fine because Bill is so fat and Nick is so thin that together they will occupy the space of two normal sized people. Jen and I are together in a tent Jen has borrowed from Jane at her work. Ella and Ben have some complex and posh monster tent borrowed from Ella’s mum and dad. Ella says Ben won’t have a fucking clue how to put it up, so Bill and Nick will have to help. I say fat chance, Nick can’t change a plug and Bill will be hitting the beers early and be way too pissed to put up any tent, let alone a big complicated one. So I think erecting the big posh tent might be a problem. Oh well. We’ll work it out. So looking forward to Bill arriving and us all having fun next weekend. I hope the weather stays as good as it is today. Spring in Sydney is glorious.

Today I am babysitting for Ruth at work. She was so grateful – like giving up a Saturday of housework is such a big deal for me.
